There’s been thousands of screaming fans on both ends of the spectrum complaining about the BS of the BCS. Both sides of the argument are valid – to a point. Let’s measure the factors and see how the scale should really tip:

Factor #1 – Strength of Schedule

Who gets the nod? Florida Gators. They play in the SEC in one of the toughest conferences in the country. LSU, Alabama – whew! Tough teams. And besides, what’s the big deal about a 1 point loss to Ole Miss? Florida’s key wins? LSU, Alabama, Florida St., Oklahoma and Georgia.

As Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend.”

Utah beat 4 ranked teams. While they play in a weaker conference than the SEC – they did have some huge wins. Oregon St., TCU, BYU, Alabama.

While the edge goes to Florida in this category – it is a small edge. After all, Utah did beat Alabama by a larger margin that Florida did.

#2 – Coaching Staffs

Flip a coin. 50/50 chance you get the right pick here. Utah Utes head football coach Kyle Whittingham served as Urban Meyer’s defensive coordinator during Utah’s undefeated season in 2004.

Urban Meyer left Utah to pursue the “glory land” of the SEC at Florida. Urban Meyer surrounds himself with the best talent in the industry. Kyle Whittingham fits that mold.

After seeing the Utes pulverize Alabama’s vaunted SEC power running game, it would be interesting to see how they’d stack up vs. the Gators. (Too bad nobody will ever know.)

There are so many factors involved when making a decision as to “Who’s the best”? But here’s the problem – since when are “Quality wins and losses” subjective?

Who cares who played who and who beat who by how much?

Any given day in college football – upsets can happen. So who’s to say Utah couldn’t beat Florida? Who’s to say how Tim Tebow would perform against Utah’s staunch defense? Who’s to say how Brian Johnson and the Utes would perform against Florida? NOBODY KNOWS. IT’S ALL SPECULATION!

One thing that is concrete, solid and stamped in approval is this simple, objective fact.

The Utah Utes are 13-0.
The Florida Gators are 13-1.

How can anyone argue with that?

IF the Utah Utes played the Florida Gators - who would win?
