Jake Locker QB Washington Husky Football

Jake Locker QB Washington Husky Football

Okay, so I was watching some fun college football and I got to watch this super exciting football game between the BYU Cougars and the Washington Huskies.

There was 8 seconds left in the game when Jake Locker, University of Washington’s quarterback, scrambled around and scored a touchdown.  He threw the ball behind his head and jumped and cheered.  His teammates swarmed him!  It was so exciting.  He has a chance to put his team into overtime!

What happens?  The worst official call in college football history.  The worst rule.  “Excessive celebration.”

Just exactly what is “excessive celebration” ?  My boyfriend was trying to help me understand the rule and I just got angry.  I mean, why can’t a quarterback who’s worked so hard jump up and down after scoring a touchdown?  It was so exciting… and then this silly yellow flag came out on the field.

Turns out, that flag cost the Washington Huskies 15 yards and they had to move back for the extra point.  The score was 28 - 27 at that point.  Washington got backed up and BYU blocked the extra point attempt!  It was so incredible!

You can watch all the footage right here.

“Excessive celebration” is the most ridiculous, stupid, silly, goofy rule in the history of college football.  What’s wrong with letting the players have some fun?!?!  Especially in a big moment like that.

Poor Washington Huskies.  The NCAA committee needs to change that rule.  Washington and their football team got “screwed” today.

What do you think of the “excessive celebration” rule?  Please - leave a comment.

He wasn’t called for jumping with his teammates, he got called for throwing the football.

In high school and college, you’re not allowed to do ANYTHING with the football after scoring a touchdown except drop it on the ground (no spinning or intentional bouncing(including spiking)) or hand it to an official.

I didn’t see the game so I may be speaking ignorantly…but if the kick was blocked, did the penalty really matter? Wouldn’t they have still missed if they had been 15 yards closer? It doesn’t seem that 15 more yards, at that close distance, would require the kick to be that much flatter putting the trajectory of the kick more within the reach of the D-line. Again, I didn’t see the game, but perhaps someone could let me know.

Okay, so I watched the footage. That ball was blocked on the 20 as easily as it was on the 35. 35 yards is nothing for a kicker.

The call is still stupid and ridiculous, though. Dumb rule, but irrelevant penalty. That’s my final opinion

I thought this was the height of ridiculousness! While the refs may not have intentionally decided the final victor that was the outcome of this call. I recognize that rules are rules but this seems almost like an abuse of power by the refs.

I wanted to extend an invitation to participate in the weekly blog carnival that I host on Athletic Alley! If you follow the backlink, you will see the blog carnival in the right hand column. It could definitely provide more exposure for your site and the sport (or sports) you love. This would make an excellent contribution.
